Learn What Broadband is & Revel in Watching TV Shows Online
Written by Raif Dunn
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Broadband is ultra high speed internet access, & is notably faster than slow dial-up access over a modem. If you are looking over this broadband guide then you are assumably looking at buying www access for the 1 st time, or wanting to increase your internet speed to broadband.

The main perk of high speed broadband is users are able to listen to the radio over the worldwide web all this has became exceedingly popular with the BBC launching their new TV show software which will allow users to watch the latest shows of Supernatural. With fast broadband people will often also get pop music and horror movies at a much better speed than super slow dial-up access.

Broadband is effortless to hook up. The very first action surfers will need to do is sign up with an ISP, of course known as an Internet Service Provider, & the broadband organisation will supply people with a broadband connection through your telephone connection. If people currently have an ISP then make sure surfers seek an internet provider comparison online website for unprejudiced advice on the greatest broadband offers. You can quickly note the greatest deals with a broadband comparison website by simply putting in your street and house number & then the website will come back with a list of high speed internet packages in your area. You yourself will be under no obligation to register with any internet while you browse the provider deals.

Once surfers have signed up with your ISP the organisation will arrange a day for turning on the connection & supply clients with any required routers & cd software. The wireless routers & connection software might often come with step by step instructions & the majority of ISP’s might often offer clients IT guidance if needed.

Once users have successfully connected to the worldwide web surfers can start to like the quick speeds of broadband. If people are going to get music, television shows such as Star Trek or horror movies please be aware of any download limits you yourself may have on your www package. Hip hop music and TV downloads such as Cops might take up a lot of your ‘download allocation’ as the broadband firm are huge in file size. Find the best broadband package by using Compare Broadband UK.

Picking Out Audition Pieces
Written by Drama Queen
Sunday, 11 May 2008

Whenever I have to pick an audition piece, I always try to keep something simple my drama teacher once told me in my head. Audition pieces are meant to showcase your strengths and hide your weaknesses. Therefore, pick something that shows the directors what you can do. This doesn't mean that audition pieces should pander. Most people don't like suck-ups – even in show business – so your audition monologue should express your individuality as well.

Still, it should be in the same realm as the part you are auditioning for. If you're trying out for a headstrong, reckless young man, pick something with that role. If you're auditioning for a play where wordplay plays a central role, pick something witty and difficult to say. The key is to be close enough, but not too close to the part you're auditioning for. That way, it doesn't come off as pandering.

Of course with musical audition pieces, You have a lot more leeway in some ways. You don't really need to preserve the emotional tone of what you are auditioning for. A musical audition piece should show your range and your expressive abilities. It doesn't really have to show that you are able to take on the role of the dramatic lovelorn protagonist, for example, or whatever other dramatic character you're taking on. Pick a song you like and one that exhibits your full range.

It may sound obvious to some of you, but stay away from audition monologues that are too obvious. Just as it is difficult for poets to write a new and original love poems, so it is difficult for even the most experienced actors to bring anything new to, say, audition pieces from Hamlet. A lot of people will groan if they hear you giving a monologue from Hamlet and so, even if you give it a great performance, you will still face heavier obstacles than if you had chosen something less well tread. Your audition should not come from something where the director will instantly be able to compare you to dozens of other people in his head. It should be something that he has heard of but is not very familiar with, or is familiar with but still finds fresh and intriguing. From what I've heard from some of the people I've talked to, it is actually better to be a little bit too obscure than to obvious. As long as it is good, it will be appreciated.

Stock Investors Need To Be TV Critics
Friday, 02 May 2008

An important stock 101 rule that many investors don’t know deals with analysts on television.  Because much of the public information comes from television networks like CNBC, it’s important to know how to analyze and use that information.  All investors, especially beginner stock investors, need to know that all the information collected on the television can’t always be good and reliable.  However, they also need to know that some stock knowledge is critical to know.  Either way, investors need to have the ability to dissect the information found on the television, just like a critic, to better their investing efforts.

Most analysts that are interviewed on these networks are likely to be lower-classed individuals in the investing community.  Therefore, you’re likely to be retrieving stock knowledge from analysts with little power and little experience.  They are coming on the air because their company’s want them to.  Therefore, just like those famous analysts, they are there not to provide you with the best quality information available.  They might give you second rate information or even information that is already known publicly.  Either way, whether you’re a beginner stock investor or an experienced investor, it’s important to do your stock homework to figure out what information is useful.

Every stock 101 guide will inform you that it’s critical to not follow every information or lead you learn blindly.  Like I said above, analysts that are interviewed are there for themselves and not for you.  So you can’t know what information is correct and what isn’t.  But what people don’t know is that sometimes, they give you good stock knowledge but don’t reveal some of the most important details that can help better your decisions. They might tell you what they predict or what they feel are great buys and give you some pretty good reasons.  But they probably won’t tell you the biggest reasons for their predictions or what they believe are the best buys.  If you have a Goldman Sacchs analyst come on air to talk about a certain stock, they don’t want to give every single reason why they should buy it, especially if they are talking for free.  They want those beginner stock investors to employ their firm.

Think of this situation as a stock 101 rule in that it’s important to listen to financial media but it’s even more important not to believe what everybody says.  Keep watching the television and listen to what the interviewees have to say, but don’t blindly follow their recommendations.  It doesn’t matter if the person is Warren Buffet or some random person off the market floor, nothing they can say should ever spark you to do something without researching it first.  Be a TV critic and question everything.  Remember, stock knowledge is the most important thing to being a successful beginner stock investor so there should never be a point in your investing life to buy or sell a stock without doing the appropriate homework.

If you found this stock 101 lesson to be helpful and wish to learn more about beginner stock investing, please visit my website.  My site contains valuable stock knowledge including investing rules and tips that I’ve learned from my 20 years in the stock market.  Click here for stock 101.

Carnival Glass - The History
Written by Lars Dodd
Friday, 07 March 2008

Carnival Glass, originally called Iridescent Ware, first came out in late 1907. It was not commonly referred to as Carnival Glass until the 1950s, though, when collectors started calling it that. These pieces were typically made from extremely ornate glass pieces, characterized by the myriad hues of their sheens. Their luster was achieved by applying metallic salt sprays to the glass before it had completely cooled down.

Made as both functional and ornamental objects and found in a wide array of colors, carnival glass is an inexpensive pressed glass, often called dope glass by glass factory workers because of the process of applying the iridescent coloring, which is known as doping. Its production can be traced back to as early as 1907, with many, many different pieces in over 150 distinct patterns. It did not, however, command the expected prices, and was subsequently discounted heavily.

This glass is made in many translucent colors like primarily amethyst, marigold, cobalt, green, and red. It is also made in opaque white, which is referred to as milk glass. Before the hazards of radiation were well known, the glass was also made in semi-transparent or translucent pale green and was named as Vaseline or uranium glass. Vaseline glass and uranium glass contain traces of uranium salts in the glass which can make a faint green glass glow in reaction to UV light.

Among the greatest producers of this type of glass was Millersburg glass Company in Ohio. The first glass products by that company were crystal however the Millersburg plant decided to follow success for iridescent glassware. So in the beginning of 1910 the Millersburg Company started its line of Radium glasswares

Carnival glass has become a popular item for collectors. Some pieces are worth pennies, but hard-to-find pieces can bring in hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making for a wide range in prices. The market is jumping for this antique glass collectible .

The carnival glass is very difficult to identify. Unfortunately, most of the manufacturers avoid including a maker's mark in their product. Others did so only for part of the time they manufactured the glass. The process of identification involves matching of patterns, colors, sheen, edges, thickness, factors found in old manufacturer's trade catalogs and other known examples, or other reference material. Identifying this glass has become a challenge even to experts since many manufacturers produced duplicates of their rivals' popular patterns.

Carnival glass is made as both functional and ornamental objects. This innovative glassware made in highly patterned moulds has a vivid metallic sheen of changing hues on pressed glass articles. This glass is available in many translucent colors like primarily amethyst, marigold, cobalt, green and red. It is also made in opaque white, which is also referred to as milk glass. Prices vary widely depending on their quality and availability. It has become an antique glass collectible. To figure out who made the glass one has to match, patterns, colors, sheen, edges, thickness etc. One of the biggest producers is millersburg glass company in Ohio.

Carnival Glass Bowls An Overnight Hit
Written by Jill Rawles
Thursday, 06 March 2008

Carnival glass originated in the early 1900s, and production waned in the mid to late thirties. The bowls of carnival glass are part of a larger collection of collectable items known as carnival glass. Carnival glass is coated with iridescent, giving it an oil-like sheen and this glass is inexpensive. This process is known as doping and hence many leading glass manufacturers call it "dope glass".

The Fenton company is largely recognized as the first and largest producer of carnival glass. Fenton began life as a company that decorated blank glass produced by other companies. In 1907 they began creating their own carnival glass, which was initially marketed as "Iridill," or, more simply, iridescent ware when Feton glassware began production. It was an overnight hit and many other companies began turning out and marketing their own carnival glass bowls.

During the Depression in the late 1920s, demand on products began to decrease which impacted to sales reduction and partly dissemination of the market of glass companies. Because of this, some companies started selling merchandise to extremely low prices, which led to closure of business, just to get rid of stocks to carnivals which they use as prizes on games.

"Carnival glass" refers to glass bowls given as carnival prizes in the early part of the 20th century, as well as reproductions made by several companies in the 1950s, thanks to renewed popularity at that time. Today, both the antique Fenton style and the later styles are prized by collectors.

If you're looking for carnival glass, your best bet presently would be auctions, antique shops or online for various prices. Fenton antique glass in particular fetches high prices, along with other popular carnival glass. Marigold and dark hues - such as blue and green - are some of the most common colors. Red pastel colored carnival glass bowls are the most prized and expensive variety. One rare ice-blue colored plate in particular sold for an amazing $16,327.55 on a popular auction website!

For the newbie collectors, there are a lot of resources with plenty of information. A lot of web sites and books are out there for information on the many sizes and shapes these antiques are available. There are organizations for would-be enthusiasts too, which is a good method to learn more.

Carnival glass bowls are a highly collectible type of glass. They were produced by covering glass with an iridescent, shiny coating. The largest producer of carnival glass was Fenton. Fenton glassware quickly became popular, and other companies started producing carnival glass as well. Due to market saturation and the Great Depression, demand for carnival glass declined sharply in the late 1920s. Today, antique Fenton glass in particular is sought after by collectors, with red and pastel colored pieces considered the most valuable. Many resources are available for those new to collecting, such as websites and books with information on the various types of carnival glass.

Rare Baseball Cards - Build A Collection, Cash In
Written by Jon Hearder
Friday, 29 February 2008

Collecting baseball cards is a hobby that many people enjoy in life. Coming across a card that they don't yet have in their collection is just about the most exciting thing to a collector. Vintage cards the more rare cards are the ones most sought after by collectors and, of course, they have much more monetary value.

Most of the "old" baseball cards you will see today are reproductions of the originals. There are, however, still a few of the original cards in circulation. Often there are less than 100 cards left of a given player and year. High demand for these cards has pushed their prices up, in some cases to thousands of dollars. The exact price level is determined by demand, condition, and the number of cards available.

Some of the most rare baseball cards are from the players that we all know quite well. Players like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and even Honus Wagner have all had fabulous careers in the world of baseball. Baseball cards for these players were collectible even when they were still playing.

In many of these rare baseball cards you may see worn corners and edges or even some creases on parts of the cards itself, reason being that for some players the companies which produced their cards had the cards printed on thin and poor quality cardboard paper. Due to the fact that many collectors were only children and fans of the game, the cards themselves were not protected.

Now unless there is a large amount of damage to the cards, these rare baseball cards still have the ability of causing lots of excitement when they appear in public. The main reason for this being the lack of cards which can be found by baseball collectors. For this reason when one of these rare baseball cards like that of the T206 Honus Wagner card surfaces you can see that collectors and wealthy fans themselves are gearing up for a high stakes bidding.

The Topps Company's long association with baseball has made it the best-known name in the baseball card market. Its first set of baseball cards, released in 1951, was intended to be used as a game. In 1952, however, Topps produced the set that brought the modern sports trading card to life. Today the 1952 Topps set is one of the most valuable baseball card sets ever produced.

Topps has continued to produce Topps baseball cards sets ever since and today Topps continues to build on its established tradition. Armed with the latest technologies and an unparalleled stable of brands, The Topps Company is leading the charge into the next generation of baseball trading cards.

The majority of collectors, even serious ones, do not have the means to deal in Wagners and Ruths. In recent years, MLB cards from the '70s have proven to be a great investment for the common collector. Cards of Mike Schmidt, Carlton Fisk, Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker, and other greats from the era have shown a marked increase in value.

Although their value continues to increase, most people can still afford to buy MLB cards from the 1970s. Many of the most valuable cards are available for less than $300. However, with the increased growth potential, collectors could sell them for much more in the future.

Collecting baseball cards as a hobby is quite popular with many people. Collectors find it exciting and sometimes very profitable, especially when they can locate genuine vintage cards. Most old baseball cards are copies, but originals are out there. Unless a card has been significantly damaged, rare baseball cards cause a lot of excitement when they appear in public. The Topps Company, established in 1951, is an expert in the field of baseball card production. Topps baseball cards are highly sought-after. Some can be astronomically expensive, but MLB cards from the 1970s have turned out to be a great investment that the common collector can generally afford.

Back Massager: The Spa Treatment At Home
Written by Colt Authors
Thursday, 28 February 2008

There are not many things that are more pleasant than a back massage. Expensive massages at spas or gyms are not viable options for most of us on a regular basis, so why not just invest the money in your own personal back massager instead? You'll have hours of relaxing massages in your very own home. While not quite as thorough as a professional massage, a handheld massager no massage chair can work on a consistent basis to get the knots out of your back, lift your mood, and erase the stress from daily living.

A hand held back massager is simple to use and will be found in almost all shops near your home. They do only need some batteries to run the vibration on the hard rubber nodules, and you will enjoy the elimination of knots from your back. Certain brands offer heat as well for truly deep penetrations into the back tissue and muscles.

Find a knot or a kink on your back, push the back massager onto it while it is vibrating and it will go away in a moment. You may use it on your feet, your back, your leg... anywhere it can go. It can be a very relaxed day if you ask a loved person to help you out in difficult places to reach.

An alternative option is to utilize the massaging chair for your back and legs. A full body massage chair is built with a group of rollers implanted inside the chair's back, which roll up and down your spine. It also has firm rubber knobs to put pressure on specifics areas of your back. Some are even built with a calf and foot massager attachment specifically designed for your legs.

Massaging chairs usually have a variety of built-in massage profiles that can give you just the right massage for your needs. They may have programs to target specific areas of your body, to calmly relax you to sleep, or even to rigorously wake you from sleep. Some even allow you to program your own profile - the ultimate customized massage!

A back massager is probably a great utility in your house to improve your feelings and help you feeling the best you can. Low cost hand held massagers are now easily obtainable and they are great holiday gifts as well. More expensive massaging chairs are created for deep tissue massages and they do really perform well on your back. You should decide what's best for you in the long time.

There aren't many things in life more pleasant than a back massage. Professional massages are too expensive and time-consuming, so why not invest the money in your own personal back massager instead? A handheld massager only needs a few batteries to massage knots and kinks away. Apply it to any muscle you can reach and the knot disappears within minutes. A full body massage chair has rollers and nodes that correspond to key areas of your back. A calf and foot massager is available for tired legs. Massagers are easily attainable and are a wonderful addition to any home to keep you feeling your best.

Silver Dollar Coins: Prized Collectibles
Written by Vaness Shulman
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Many people enjoy coin collecting as a hobby, particularly collecting and trading silver dollars. These days, silver dollars coins are quite rare. Some people are quite excited when they find one and consider it a treasure. Others see them as a dollar and have no problem spending it.

Morgan silver dollars were placed into circulation in the late 19th century. This striking coin features Lady Liberty's face on one side and the image of an eagle on the other. Because some collectors feel the eagle is rather scrawny, this coin is often referred to as the "buzzard dollar." However, because the United States government stopped producing Morgan silver dollars in 1921, they are now quite collectible and a treasure to own.

Some people like to trade their coins for others. Hobbyists like themselves may own a certain coin that is needed to fit a specific collection, so they will turn to these fellow coin collectors and offer one of their own unique coins. To trade dollar coins, you will have to have a fairly rare coin yourself. Most coin collectors have many dollar coins and will trade a coin they have a duplicate of, so as not to lose the coin for their collection.

There are many beautiful silver dollar coins. Silver dollars are worth quite a bit more than coins made primarily of copper, and they generally look better. The United States Government issues many commemorative silver dollar coins for limited periods of time, allowing collectors to save these coins and trade them later after they are no longer minted.

The older and rarer a coin, the more that coin is worth. If you have a coin that is extremely rare, it doesn't really matter what condition it is in. If you have a coin that is less rare, its condition will matter and the better it looks, the more money it will be worth. A Morgan dollar that is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition will command a lot of money because it is not only a rare coin, but it is in perfect condition.

Collecting coins requires a large amount of independent research. Buying, selling and just collecting silver dollars requires a large amount of knowledge to be successful. As with most topics, the more you know, the more successful you will become.

Collecting silver dollar coins is a popular hobby shared by many. Circulated between the late 19th century and 1921, morgan dollar coins are sought after due to their rarity. The United States issues commemorative coins for limited periods, increasing their value. Many people trade dollar coins in order to get better coins. Older and rarer coins are worth more, also if it has not been in circulation or is in mint condition it will be very valuable. Conducting research into which coins you are thinking about collecting can help you manage your collection more effectively and gain the coins you wish to collect.

Tankless Water Heaters Helps To Save Money
Written by Dan Leaner
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

One does not use the hot water 24 hours a day. But, one ends up paying to heat water 24 hours a day. With a standard water heater, one heat and reheat the same water even when he is not using it.

A cost-effective and waste-minimizing way to heat your home is the Bosch Powerstar Tankless Water Heater. It warms water rapidly and can deliver a larger volume of output water than many comparable heaters. Know that when you buy a Bosch Powerstar tankless water heater, you're only paying to heat your water and not for the waste and inefficiency that you may otherwise have.

Demand water heaters provide hot water only when it is needed. They don't produce the standby energy losses, which helps people to save a lot of money. Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 15 years. Because of easily replaceable parts that extend it's life by many more years.

In contrast, storage water heaters last for much less years. Periodic water heater maintenance significantly extends water heater's life and minimizes the loss of efficiency. On the working part the Tankless water heaters have an electric, gas, or propane heating device that is activated by the flow of water.

After triggering the mechanism, the heater continues to provide a flow of hot water. The maximum rate of flow at a specific temperature depends on the heater's capacity. Generally speaking, water heaters that are gas operated have bigger capacities than ones that are electrically powered.

Tankless water heaters are evaluated by the greatest rate of current at which a preferred temperature is encountered. Water heater features include the ability to set a release temperature. There is also a much higher rate of effectiveness with tankless water heaters as it reduces the possibility of standby losses.

Tankless water heaters obtain their maximum flow rate at the point when the target maximum temperature is met. Standard water heaters (tanked) lose energy heating the water when waiting for usage by the consumer. This is not the case for tankless where its efficiency is much higher because it is only heating the water as needed. During usage the temperature can be changed by the user to meet their needs.

Paying for hot water continuously throughout all 24 hours of the day doesn't really make sense when you think about it. Traditional water heaters heat and reheat the same water, even when it's not being used at all. An on-demand hot water heater doesn't heat water until it is needed. These tankless water heaters will usually last for at least fifteen years, saving significant energy and heating expense over its service life. The Bosch Powerstar Tankless Water Heater warms water rapidly, and delivers a larger volume of output water than many comparable heaters, all without burning a hole through your budget. Experience the difference, buy Bosch Powerstar tankless heater.

Soccer - The Positions
Written by Bill Brennan
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

The positions of soccer are very different but all help out the team which always wants to meet the goal to win a match.

A simple formation of players on the field is the four-four-two. This means there are four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. Also there is one goalkeeper but that is an automatic and unneeded position to mention and would waste space on any given formation sheet. The defenders and the goalie are in charge of defending the goal. The center backs are the two in the center. There can be four defenders in a line or a sweeper or center back. There is also a Stopper who stands in front of the sweeper and helps out the midfield. With this type of situation or formation, the two to the right and left of the sweeper are right and left backs respectively. The two center backs are in charge of primarily defending the goal while the side backs can be more offensive minded and help out on offensive as much as the goalie will allow them to. The midfielders control the middle. There are two middle midfielders that control the midfield. There are also two outside midfielders known as wing midfields who run up and down the length of the field. Finally, there are two forwards that are in charge of scoring and setting up scoring opportunities for the team. The forwards do not always have to score but they are generally the top goal scorers for any given team. This is a general formation that is usually the basis for every team.

While there are certain changes to this formation it is most commonly used by many teams because it serves all a teams needs. There are enough defenders to spot a lot of potential attacks and there are enough offensive players to generate counter or regular attacks.

The skill set of a defender is one who knows the game fairly well. The center backs or the sweeper needs to be very intelligent. The sweeper is the leader of the defense and needs to lead very well. While the goalkeeper controls all the defenders, the sweeper needs to be able to tell the defense and tell his or her own self what to do in an attack situation. The two wing defenders need to be good at defending and have a certain good amount of speed to defend well. The stopper is generally good at heading the ball and using his head. Also this person needs to be good at stopping the ball before it gets to the other defenders and especially the sweeper. Midfielders need to be generally fast and have good ball technique. The speed helps them run up and down the line, winning balls at either half. These players must have this speed because they are both offensive and defensive players that generate and defend both tasks effectively. Finally, forwards need to have a good shot and a very amount of speed to score goals in abundance and to do the same job effectively.

Confused with who goes where? Play billiards instead and all you need worry about is your self. A few billiard practice drills and you will be playing better than ever.

Ruby Glass Dinnerware, The Perfect Dishes
Written by Erin March
Wednesday, 20 February 2008

Ruby glass dinnerware gives a stunning presentation and very few china designs equal this. Having meals using this dinnerware

makes a remarkable meal absolutely unforgettable because of the rich elegance of the color, coupled with the rainbow shine

thrown off when the light hits the glass.

Your dinner guest will surely notice the sense of royalty and sophistication brought by Ruby glass dinnerware. The dinnerware

will enhance your menu whether you choose a china set that has dishes and beverages ware that is completely ruby colored or

has a unique crimson touches for its accents

While ruby glass dinnerware is extremely exquisite, it is very easy and convenient to replace a piece should the need arise.

For instance, if a guest accidentally breaks a carnival glass tumbler, many retailers can quickly replace the piece from

their on-site inventory. It is important that replacement options are available to ensure the continued beauty of your

collection, and ruby dinnerware sets are unique and breathtaking without remaining too rare.

Ruby glass dinnerware collections have become popular and are often the highlight of your table settings, but many hosts add

a creative touch by accenting the settings with pieces from their green glass dinnerware. Ruby glass lends itself to being

complemented with other glass dinnerware, and allows you to provide a theme to special occasions. One example is using blue

accents to help celebrate the American Fourth of July Holiday.

This design is especially good and welcoming during winter holidays at Christmas time. The traditional green and red motif

gets a much loved update when you showcase the sparkling glass with crackling fire and glowing candles. Your guests will

realise it and appreciate your decorations while sitting down at the table with you.

The most important thing about selecting dinnerware is that it is meant to be used. Many people purchase great china, only to

lock it away in a cabinet somewhere, never to be used, which misses the whole point. Beautiful ruby glass dinnerware, or any

other fine dinnerware, should be served upon to create memories your family will always remember.

Very few pieces of china can match the beauty of ruby glass dinnerware. The colors are rich and elegant, and the sense of

sophistication is unmatchable. Many replacement pieces of such dinnerware are available if necessary, and for a reasonable

price. Green glass dinnerware, as well as other colors, may be used to accent the ruby glass. A carnival glass tumbler for

each diner can further the impression of opulence. This dinnerware is meant to be used, not stored away in a dusty china

cabinet. Your family and guests will appreciate this glassware when they see it and use it.

Pocket Doors ? Installation
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

During the 1890’s pocket doors were a common feature of elegant homes. As the name suggests, a pocket door slides out of sight right into the wall. While the old pocket doors tended to be noisy, hard to open and close, and had a tendency to come off the tracks, newer designs of pocket doors make them quieter, stronger, and easy to operate. This has made the installation of pocket doors more popular in recent years.

Pocket doors make excellent additions to small homes, eliminating the need for extra space for the door to swing open. Keep in mind though, that installing a pocket door is not for an average, saturday do-it-yourself project – like a repair hardwood floor. Unless, that is, you are doing a larger project in which the walls surrounding the door frame are open. If you are building a new home or completely renovating a room, installing a pocket door can be an easy do-it- yourself project.

Supplies

As with any project, it is important to have all needed supplies and tools readily accessible before beginning. Here is a list of what you will need to install your pocket door:

Door

Pocket Door Hardware Kit

Tape Measure

Framing Lumber

Casing Lumber

Hammer

Hacksaw

Level

Construction Adhesive

Drywall

Drywall Tape

Joint Compound

Paint

Paintbrushes

Here is what you do:

Step 1 – Framing. The frame for a pocket door will actually need to be twice the width of the door. This is to accommodate the door when it is closed and outside the wall, and when it is open and inside the wall. Most manufacturers of pocket doors suggest that your frame be twice the width of your door plus one inch. (Check the manufacturers instructions for the specific size frame to match the door you purchased.) When framing the top of the door opening, it is important to be sure that the rough opening is plumb (the same height all the way across) and that the header is level. If these two things are not done, your door will most likely be hard to open and close.

Step 2 – Install the hardware. Using a hacksaw cut the pocket door header and the track assembly to the length needed. Install the header and track assembly using the bracket and fasteners that come with the door. You will find two sets of thin metal supports in the hardware kit – these are referred to as “stiffeners”. The jamb stiffeners are attached to the header and fastened to the floor while the side-split jambs are installed in the middle of the pocket framing. (Be sure to following the installation instructions that come with the kit carefully in order to place the stiffeners in the appropriate positions.) Next, you will install the door bumper. This is placed on the stud at the back of the pocket.

Step 3 – Preparing the door. Since the pocket door will be sliding into the wall when opened, it is important that you finish the door before you install it into the pocket frame. Apply paint or varnish to both sides of the door, as well as the edges and let it dry completely before installing. Once the door has been finished, the next step is to mount the doorplates to the top of the door and place the hangers into the track. Then you will hang the door, adjust it for height, and use built-in adjusting nuts to plumb the door.

Step 4 – Drywall. Once the door is hung and adjusted correctly, it is time to cover up the framework. The next step is to install the drywall. In order to avoid using nails or screws that may protrude into the pocket and scratch the door as it slides in and out of the pocket, you will use construction adhesive to attach the drywall to the framing members. Be sure to tape any joints in the drywall and finish the seams using the joint compound.

Step 5 – Install the adjustable door guides at the mouth of the pocket. These are designed to center the door in the pocket in order to keep it sliding smoothly.

Step 6 – Install the side jambs and the head jambs. It is best to use screws when installing the head jambs – this will make it easier for you to remove the door should the need arise.

Step 7 – The final step is to install the door casings. Place construction adhesive on the backside of the casing and use finishing nails to secure the casing.

Creating a Home Office
Friday, 16 November 2007

The popularity of telecommuting has made the “home office” a necessity in many homes. For many years, the home office was considered the corner of the kitchen table where Mom or Dad paid the bills and did the taxes. Those days have changed and now the home office is a little closer to an actual office.

Internet access has brought about many changes over the years. One of the most popular changes is the ability to work from home – whether you telecommute with the company you work for or start your own home business, it will be easier to accomplish if you set aside space for a home office. Before you begin, you should sit down and plan your home office – determine what equipment is necessary for you to work (computer, fax machine, etc.) and how private or open you want your office to be. Here are some things to consider when planning your home office:

Location – The first thing you should do is to decide where you want you home office to be. In some cases, where there is limited space, you may not have many choices. But, even in homes with little room, there are a few things that can be done to provide space for a home office – for instance, a closet can be converted into a small office space or a corner of a room can be converted into office space. If you will be spending a lot of time in your “home office”, you will want to consider things such as privacy, comfort, and view.

Plan – Once you have decided where your home office will be located, you will need to plan out your workspace, keeping in mind both comfort and efficiency. Be sure that there are connections for needed equipment such as a telephone and computer. Draw out a floor plan that will allow you to situation you desk (the most important piece of furniture in your home office) and it should be situated so that you have easy access to the surface for working as well as easy access to office equipment you may need. Another important thing to remember, especially if you will be spending a lot of time in your workspace is the desk chair – the chair should be adjustable so that you can place it at the right height and the chair should also provide adequate back and arm support for a more comfortable workspace. Be sure that you have adequate light to avoid straining your eyes.

Organization – Almost as important as planning, organization will determine how effectively you can work from your home office. The computer monitor should be placed so that you won’t have to strain to see it, and your keyboard and mouse should be within easy reach. To avoid clutter, designate a specific place for things – such as mail, reference books, and other supplies. Things that are not used often can be stored in drawers or on shelves to minimize the clutter on your workspace.

Storage – Depending on the size of your work area, you may need to have a storage area in another part of your home – perhaps the basement. This area can be used to store extra supplies and items that are sometimes necessary, but are not used on a daily basis.

Floor – Don't overlook your flooring options. Carpet may be wonderful for the spare bedroom but picking staples out of shag pile is no fun. Installing a vinyl floor might be a better solution.

Visitors – If the type of business you do involves face-to-face meetings with clients, you will need to ensure that your home office is designed so that you can accommodate clients in comfort and provide the privacy needed. If you will be meeting with clients in your home office, you should provide a professional atmosphere in which you and your client can work together.

Tips for Painting Your Home
Thursday, 01 November 2007

Painting is often a time-consuming and expensive project. For many, hiring professionals to paint is just not an option. Here are some tips to help you get professional results when you do-it-yourself.

Painting the interior of your home is often one of the first steps when redecorating. While the perfect scenario would be to hire professional painters, this is often not an option for those who are on a budget. Just like many other redecorating projects, painting is one that can be done without the help of professionals. Here are some tips to help you accomplish the task of painting the interior of your home and getting professional results:

Clear the walls of any hardware or decorations, including electrical outlet covers and light switch covers. Remove all nails, brads, or pins that have been used to hold pictures and paintings.

Clear the room of dirt and dust particles. Be sure to wash the walls to remove any dirt or marks that could bleed through the new paint. If the room is carpeted, vacuum before you begin to eliminate dust particles from mixing with the paint as it is applied to the walls.

Cover anything that should not be painted. Use painter’s tape and plastic sheets to cover borders, windows, and other areas to avoid getting paint where it shouldn’t be. If the room is carpeted, cover the entire floor with a drop cloth – otherwise you will need more than these carpet cleaning tips to get you out of trouble.

Repair any holes in the wall using spackle. Use a spackle knife to spread the spackle evenly and sand the area to remove excess spackle.

If there are any areas that need caulking, this should be done at least twelve hours before painting in order to allow the caulking to dry properly. Once you have filled in the necessary areas, run a damp sponge over it to provide a clean look with no clumps.

Don’t use the paint straight from the can. If you are painting with a brush, you should add small amounts of paint frequently in order to avoid spilling. When painting with rollers, fill the tray about a third full, making the tray easier to move and making it less likely for the paint to run over the edges as your wet your roller.

Use brushes rather than rollers for areas near the edge of the area to be painted – such as near the floors, ceiling, and in corners. A small chiseled brush and a steady hand will allow you to paint these areas without getting paint on the ceiling and floor.

Once the edges and corners have been painted, use a roller to paint the wall. You should avoid loading the roller with too much paint, which can cause the paint to spread unevenly and leave heavy paint deposits in the areas that the roller first comes into contact with.

If you are changing the color of the room, you should apply two coats of paint in order to ensure that you get a thick coat that doesn’t allow previous colors to “bleed” through. If you are going from a darker color to a lighter color, it may be a good idea to add a base coat of primer before you begin painting.

Where do you find your Inspiration?
Tuesday, 02 October 2007

Inspiration is all around us but when we have pain and suffering in our lives it seems so hard to find. It seems as though someone read our minds when we receive a little pick-me-up or thoughts of inspiration given to us just when we needed it the most. Inspiration is wonderful for healing and balancing the mind, body and spirit. When our hearts are opened with sentiments of love, joy, hope, encouragement, understanding from others, or we see how others who have been afflicted with pain and sorrow, able to overcome, it gives us a positive attitude which helps our bodies to respond to healing itself. It doesn't have to come to us in a direct way but the inspiration is there for all to see and benefit from.

A child or adult with a mental challenge to win at a sport will inspire us to try as hard as they do and win despite the disability. Someone who has breast cancer inspires us to get a yearly mammogram to keep us from getting breast cancer. A father who lost his son will inspire us to tell our children how much we love them and how proud we are of them and give them a hug and kiss each night before bedtime. Weight control is hard for some of us and when we see how much weight can be lost by exercising and eating the proper nutritious foods and the "I can do this too" attitude that is inspiration. For those who are over 50, who think it is impossible or too late to pursue something you have always wanted to do and never found the time, is not true. Some of the most successful people who waited late in life to begin the journey of success are at retirement age. It doesn't matter how old someone is, you can still be inspired by them.

You may find inspiration in a child at the age of 5 who can play Mozart or

a mother who knows what it's really like to raise 9 children on a shoestring budget. Maybe it is a teenager who has overcome the use of drugs and alcohol. Find inspiration in a father or mother who works two jobs to provide college tuition for their children. Grandma in the kitchen can still make the best bread in the world. Grandpa knows when the fish are biting and the best time to catch them.

We may inspire others and never realize how important it was in someone else's life. Always be honest, caring, thoughtful to others, and looking for inspiration in the most unlikely places. We may be only one person but it takes only one person to make a difference. Look for inspiration in others as well. We can always learn something from someone else, good or bad so be prepared for your inspiration. Don’t let a moment slip away that you can inspire someone because you may not get the chance again and they may go throughout life doubting themselves or others. Inspiration leads to positive thinking which gives us a sense of pride, belonging and accomplishment.

Cash Trust Investments ? Are They For You?
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

There are three variables that all investors have to keep in mind. Security, Liquidity and Rate of Return. Cash trust investments are a good mix of the first two variables, while scoring fairly low in the last one. Still, they have their place in any investor’s balanced portfolio.

A cash trust investment is an investment product that pools the assets of several small investors and shops them around to banks, buying Certificates of Deposits (CDs) at advantageous interest rates. Because of the large sums invested, banks are willing to give a better investment rate for them. Most of these CDs are bought as ladders – the money is divided into 12 parts and CDs are bought sequentially. By spreading the investments out over several banks, with all deposits kept at $98,000 each. As the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures individual deposits of up to $100,000 in the United States, this retains insurance on your investment and makes the investment more secure.

Because of the aggregated nature of a cash trust investment its liquidity is generally better than buying individual CDs as a private investor. The well managed cash trust fund maintains around 15 to 20% of its assets in liquid form, making it possible for them to help an investor who needs to liquidate his holdings to meet a near term financial emergency. On top of that, most of these investments have somewhere close to 10% of their assets (bought as Certificates of Deposit) maturing every calendar month. This compares well to the lack of liquidity in fixed investments and bonds and bond funds.

From the perspective of a small investor, Cash Trust investments are low-yield and fairly safe products. They often turn on regularized payouts, much like buying an annuity for a structured settlement. If you’re going to do a cash trust investment, treat it as your middle term reserve fund. It’s going to be a stable vehicle for your finances, but it’s not going to grow your asset base that much. Using the traditional retirement mix of packages, a cash trust investment is a good resource to do in the last 5 or 7 years before retirement and should be gradually phased out in favor of a bond fund after retirement. Many, but not all cash trust investments request that you pay a regular amount in each month, on top of an initial $2,000 investment.

The best benefit of a cash trust fund is its low overhead. Because there’s little risk in it and there’s little pressure to “pick the hottest stocks”, there’s strong price competition among vendors – the setup fees are fairly low and the transaction fees taken from payments to you are also small and often times waived. This compares well with the transaction fees on mutual and hedge funds and the broker percentages taken from payouts.
